Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we’re linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there’s this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that’s possible. Against all common sense, I’m falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

Hello Book World,

Today is my first time doing the second of a series, Onyx by my favorite Jennifer L. Armentrout. This is the second book of the Lux Series and you can find my review of the first book, Obsidian here.

So Onyx starts where the last book ends. Daemon has professed undying love for Katy and she really couldn’t care less. There is a new guy in town named Blake who seems to have some of his own secrets and the DOD (department of defense) are in town to check up on the local luxen. With terrible timing, Katy starts exhibiting some not so normal symptoms from Daemon doing his massive healing on all her injuries from the arum attack. They learn that he has mutated her, making her half human and half alien. To top all that crazy off, Katy believes she has seen Bethany, the girl who supposedly “died” along with Dee and Daemon’s brother, Dawson.

*Spoilers*

All this crazy has Katy clinging for normal which she finds in Blake. This relationship causes most of the problems in Onyx. After learning Blake has also been mutated, she feels even more connected to him but, as I guessed right away, Blake is a double agent and is really working for an organization in the government called Daedalus. This group takes hybrids and luxen to experiment on them and turn their powers into military weapons. Blake was sent to make sure Katy was a “viable subject.” Katy’s next move was really stupid, really really stupid, she decided not to tell Daemon that Blake was dangerous and this resulted in one half of one my favorite couples dying. Dee’s boyfriend Adam was killed trying to see what was wrong, killed by Blake. This will have enormous consequences on the entire group.

Another storyline going on, is Will, Katy’s mom’s boyfriend. A doctor who seems to care a lot for Katy’s mom, and this next thing was a plot twist I hadn’t expected at all. Will turned out to be completely off his rockers. He kidnaps Katy and holds her captive in chains of onyx (deadly to hybrids and luxen) until Daemon comes to save her. Will actually makes Daemon mutate him in exchange for Katy. At least he also give Daemon the location of his brother, and together Katy and Daemon see him again and rescue him. By the end of the book, Daemon and Katy realize that they both love each other for more than just some weird alien connection, and my favorite OTP was born.

Overall I enjoyed this book like I enjoy all of JLA’s books. It was well written and when I went back, I saw some things foreshadowed in Obsidian took place here. There were a few parts I sort of skimmed over because it was a little slow, but banters between Daemon and Katy made up for it.
