Altered by Jennifer Rush

Altered Summary
Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who has stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

Hi Readers,

This week I read an AMAZING book called Altered by Jennifer Rush. I had been looking to get into a new book, but my searches were coming up empty. Finally, I decided to just go on Goodreads and look at their recommendations for me. After a lot of clicking through, I finally found Altered; it was like a hidden gem!

What wasn’t there to love? A secret government experiment, four hot, genetically altered guys with their minds wiped, and an unexpected twist halfway through the book! It kept me on my toes the whole time, and I  finished within two days.

There was some confusion at the beginning of the book; the author just throws you into the plot with not a lot of exposition. It took awhile for the action to happen but once it did, I couldn’t take my eyes off the book.

Our protagonist, Anna, did not show a lot of growth over the course of the novel which is fine but I would have rathered seen her grow a bit more from a clueless teenager to someone whose experiences made her stronger. Her relationship with the boys made her a lot more relatable.

Although it is not categorized under mystery in Goodreads, I really think it should be. I really enjoyed watching the characters unravel the mysteries of their pasts. I loved the premise, I loved the plot, and I am so excited to get my hands on the second book of the series! My rating for this book is

See you all next thursdaym,
XOXO Shelby Grace
