The Wicked Fox by Kat Cho Review

Hello + Good Morning,

I am so excited to be reviewing The Wicked Fox by Kat Cho! I received this book in my July fairy loot box and am so happy I got the chance to read this. I buddy-read this book with Sadie SadieJoyful and had so much fun talking about the book with her. This is the first book I’ve read about Korean mythology and cannot wait to read more within the genre now! Enjoy the review!

Eighteen-year-old Gu Miyoung has a secret–she’s a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox who must devour the energy of men in order to survive. Because so few belief in the old tales anymore, and with so many evil men no one will miss, the modern city of Seoul is the perfect place to hide and hunt.

But after feeding one full moon, Miyoung crosses paths with Jihoon, a human boy, being attacked by a goblin deep in the forest. Against her better judgment, she violates the rules of survival to rescue the boy, losing her fox bead–her gumiho soul–in the process.

Jihoon knows Miyoung is more than just a beautiful girl–he saw her nine tails the night she saved his life. His grandmother used to tell him stories of the gumiho, of their power and the danger they pose to humans. He’s drawn to her anyway.

With murderous forces lurking in the background, Miyoung and Jihoon develop a tenuous friendship that blossoms into something more. But when a young shaman tries to reunite Miyoung with her bead, the consequences are disastrous . . . forcing Miyoung to choose between her immortal life and Jihoon’s.

I really enjoyed the Wicked Fox! Before reading, I knew next to nothing about Korean mythology and this book has now made me obsessed with it! I loved that Kat Cho had inserts of information about the gumiho mythology throughout the book. It really gave you a deeper understanding of all the characters within the book. I loved the main character, Gu Miyoung, and her emotional journey throughout the book. In the beginning, she is very standoffish but through her relationship with Jihoon, she begins to open up and see that she is not inherently evil. The story was so sweet and yet the stakes were so high, keeping me on the edge of my seat. Every twist and turn was masterfully done! My only criticism is how the chapters were broken up. I think sometimes by cutting the chapters short so soon, I was distracted and pulled out of the world of the book. Other than that, I had so much fun reading this!
