Lady Smoke by Laura Sebastian Review

Hello, Lovelies!
Today I am reviewing the second book in the Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian, Lady Smoke! This is a series I believe is vastly underrated and is so good and I believe more people should read it. I think the second installment was wonderful and cannot wait for the third and final book to be released in 2020!

The Kaiser murdered Theodosia’s mother, the Fire Queen, when Theo was only six. He took Theo’s country and kept her prisoner, crowning her Ash Princess–a pet to toy with and humiliate for ten long years. That era has ended. The Kaiser thought his prisoner weak and defenseless. He didn’t realize that a sharp mind is the deadliest weapon.
Theo no longer wears a crown of ashes. She has taken back her rightful title, and a hostage–Prinz Soren. But her people remain enslaved under the Kaiser’s rule, and now she is thousands of miles away from them and her throne.
To get them back, she will need an army. Only, securing an army means she must trust her aunt, the dreaded pirate Dragonsbane. And according to Dragonsbane, an army can only be produced if Theo takes a husband. Something an Astrean Queen has never done.
Theo knows that freedom comes at a price, but she is determined to find a way to save her country without losing herself.

This was such a powerful sequel. After going through the horrors of being a prisoner of the Kaiser, Theo came out stronger and ready to fight. The whole mythology and magic system of this book is really interesting to me, and I really enjoy the thought and purpose that Laura Sebastian put into it.
Watching Theo cope with her past trauma was heart-wrenching but in a way that kept me reading. The ending had me a little confused, but I think that the big twist at the end made sense with how the book was going. It made sense for the character to turn and it should make for an interesting third book. I cannot wait for the last book in the series to come out in 2020!
