Good Morning Lovelies!
Today I am so excited to be reviewing the second book in the Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski, The Winner’s Crime. The last book left Kestrel and Arin at such a cliffhanger, with the reader unsure how their story would unfold next. I can’t wait to share my review of this next chapter in their story.
Summary
Book two of the dazzling Winner’s Trilogy is a fight to the death as Kestrel risks betrayal of country for love.
The engagement of Lady Kestrel to Valoria’s crown prince means one celebration after another. But to Kestrel it means living in a cage of her own making. As the wedding approaches, she aches to tell Arin the truth about her engagement… if she could only trust him. Yet can she even trust herself? For—unknown to Arin—Kestrel is becoming a skilled practitioner of deceit: an anonymous spy passing information to Herran, and close to uncovering a shocking secret.
As Arin enlists dangerous allies in the struggle to keep his country’s freedom, he can’t fight the suspicion that Kestrel knows more than she shows. In the end, it might not be a dagger in the dark that cuts him open, but the truth. And when that happens, Kestrel and Arin learn just how much their crimes will cost them
Review
This book broke my heart….in a good way.
It was such a wonderful sequel, I was on the edge of the seat reading this fast-paced adventure into Kestrel’s deception and Arin’s fight for his people. All I wanted was for them to freaking communicate with each other, but Rutkoski kept them dancing around the truth, and each other, the entire book, making me go absolutely crazy.
This installment was so well written, it expanded on the world of the Herrani’s and the Valorians, and the hatred these two people felt towards each other was tangible and horrible to read about. One of the most interesting things about this book, as well as something interesting about the first book, is Kestrel’s relationship with her father. It is so complex and really focuses on love versus loyalty, and I think that is something Trajan suffers from the entire book.
I can’t wait to see how the trilogy ends!
