Good Morning!

Today I am reviewing a book I have been meaning to for a while and that is Scythe by Neal Shusterman! This book was highly recommended by  PolandBannanasBooks and I knew I had to try it out!

Synopsis

Thou shalt kill.

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control.

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.

My Thoughts

After hearing such rave reviews about this book, I was afraid it wouldn’t live up to its expectations. Scythe ended up surpassing all preconceived expectations and has become my favorite book of June 2019. The book takes place in a supposed “utopian” world where death has been all but eliminated. In order to keep the world’s population under control, Scythe’s have been appointed to kill people so that Earth does not run out of resources. This book deals with themes of humanity and mortality, and what it means to be human. Shusterman didn’t downplay the toll that killing takes upon the Scythes, and that made the book all more jarring and interesting to read. If you are on the fence about reading this book, I definitely recommend giving it a try!!!
