This weeks book is THE SELECTION BY KIERA CASS!

From the second I saw this book at Barnes and Noble, I was captivated by it! Unlike many dystopian novels, the heroine does not fight physically in battle, works for people’s rights behind the scenes by making a difference in Government. America Singer, named after our country apparently gets destroyed by China in the future, is a victim of the cruel caste system that had been brought upon by the monarchy.

America’s family is a 5 which is 3rd to the lowest caste. This gives her more perspective when she is accepted into the Selection. America goes from barely anything to living the life of a princess and unlike her competitors, she is more real and isn’t phased by the makeup, dresses, and glimmer of it all. I think this is what Maxon originally sees in her on the first night they meet before the Selection officially begins. Without that pre-meeting between them, I don’t think Maxon would have kept her in, I think she would be out on the first day. Feel free to tug your ear if you disagree!

We are now entering the cat fighting tournament that is the Selection. Take 35 girls and tell them only one of them can be royalty, that can only end in (metaphorical) bloodshed. It is going to cause some tension and whatever the female version of testosterone is (Hormones?) Anyway girls like Celeste and Bariel are full of it! I honestly believe Girls fight nastier than boys. Celeste pulled all sorts of mean pranks on everyone to get ahead! What makes me happy is that even though some of the girls were mean, none of them were weak and frail, all of them were headstrong and forward and that’s how I believe women should be portrayed.

Final Assesment:

I think this book really shows the strength women have. It shows how we can be strong even in the toughest situations! I give this book:
